THE MOMS ON THE RUN LEGACY

In 2017, Zebra Crossings was given the opportunity to adopt the Moms On The Run 5K, which was created by Nicole Kurr and Janet Gnall to benefit Dover charities.

“Ten years ago, we were a couple of moms wanting to make a difference in our community, so we decided to organize an event. Our goal was to educate & create awareness of a local non-profit organization.

Our first race had over 300 participants, ten years later we had over 1,000, and our event has donated over $80,000 to local non-profits. WOW, what an amazing experience this has been!!!

We are ready to begin a new journey. We couldn’t be happier to pass the torch to a well-deserved local non-profit, Zebra Crossings of Dover.

We are truly grateful for your support, and continued support of the Moms on the Run race. Many thanks to all for helping a couple of moms make a difference. ”

Zebra Crossings Couch to 5K: Together, at Your Pace

From January through May, Zebra Crossings families are invited to move together—at your own pace—as we prepare for Moms On The Run 5K on May 10, 2026.

Our Couch to 5K program is designed to be indoor-friendly, adaptive, and family-centered, welcoming children and adults of all abilities and energy levels.

  • Movement is flexible: walk, roll, jog, dance, or stretch. Participation counts more than pace or distance
  • Rest days are encouraged and celebrated
  • All activities can be done indoors (home, hallway, gym, mall, community center)
  • Children and adults can participate together or separately
  • Chronic illness–friendly: flare-ups = pause, not failure

Weekly Structure (Simple & Predictable)

  • 3 movement days per week
  • 1 optional family movement day
  • 2–3 rest or recovery days
  • Sessions: 10–30 minutes max, adaptable

PHASE 4: April — Practice & Empower (Weeks 13–16)
Goal: Build confidence for event day

Movement Options (choose what works):

  1. Walk indoors (hallways, treadmill, mall)
  2. March in place
  3. Wheelchair rolls
  4. Seated or standing dance
  5. Gentle yoga or stretching

Weekly Plan:

  • 25–30 minutes total
  • Move 8-10 minutes – rest 1–2 minutes
  • Repeat 2–3 times

PHASE 5: May — Event Ready (Weeks 17–18)
Goal: Feel prepared, supported, and proud

Week Before Mother’s Day:

  • 2 light movement sessions (15–20 min)
  • Focus on stretching, hydration, and rest
  • Practice event-day plan (pace, breaks, sensory needs)

Event Day Options:

  • Walk the 5K
  • Partial distance
  • Buddy system
  • Mobility aids welcome
  • Rest stations encouraged

Showing up is the finish line.

Optional Add-Ons:

  • Light resistance (bands, soup cans)
  • Balance games
  • Short mindfulness cool-downs

Child-Friendly Ideas:
Follow-the-leader

Music movement breaks

Movement bingo cards

Chronic Illness Adaptation:
Break sessions into 5-minute chunks

Sit or lie down as needed

Focus on breathing and range of motion

Replace “move” with stretch or roll

Skip intensity increases if energy is low

Becca Pizzi will be joining us at our Moms On The Run 5K this year!

Image of Becca Pizzi, woman with straight brown hair standing in front of a bike.

We are excited to have Becca join us for our Moms On The Run 5K.

Who is Becca? Becca is a Bostonian, a mom, an author, a business owner, a lifelong runner, and the first US woman to complete the World Marathon Challenge (7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents)!

Becca is 44 years old, a 1998 Belmont High School graduate, and lives in Belmont MA with her husband Joe and 16 year old daughter Taylor.

Becca was the first American female to run the World Marathon Challenge in 2016, 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days. Then in 2018 she went back, and made history by running it again and breaking the Guinness Book of World Record in a time of 6 Days, 7 Hours and 58 minutes. Becca has completed a marathon in all 50 states. She has finished the World Marathon Majors and has run 19 consecutive Boston Marathons! She raced Kona Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii in 2023.

Becca attributes her success to her family and the Boston Community who both have inspired her and supported her dreams. She is most passionate about directing the Becca Pizzi 5k race in Belmont, and the Becca Pizzi Foundation, which provides local high school students with sports equipment and college scholarships. Becca is also the author of the children’s book “Becca’s Feat on Feet” (Becca’s Feat on Feet). All book proceeds benefit the Becca Pizzi Foundation.

Zebra Crossings is honored to have Becca join us at this year’s run.

To learn more about Becca check out her website or Facebook page.

GET TO KNOW US

Each child is unique, but they also have a lot in common and can relate to each other because of their conditions. On their own, they often stand out in their communities because of their perceived limitations or needs. However, in our community, we find strength in numbers and feel empowered. The Zebra Crossings team is committed to furthering this mission.

“It is an amazing experience to not feel alone in the world. To meet and share some wonderful kid stories has given me and my family so much hope for the future”

- Family Camp Parent

“I am not sure there are many places where there are such kind, caring people.  It is also a place where others have chronic illnesses, some the same as yours.  It makes it a lot of fun to just talk and relate to someone that you can’t necessarily do at school.”

- Teen participant

“Zebra Crossings has given my children a power they never would have learned to unleash. Here, they feel accepted, encouraged and understood. They are taught that what they believe to be their inadequacies, can really be the fire that burns inside of them and makes them a stronger, more courageous, and joyous person. Truly, Zebra Crossings has changed our lives for the better.”

- Thaia Katsos

“Before camp my son was embarrassed to go to the nurse. He wouldn’t take meds before gym, and then tried to hide his asthma symptoms and chest/lung pain.” Since camp, my son has been willing to take albuterol before gym class, has been more confident and willing to participate in groups with active outdoor activities.”

- Asthma Camp Parent

“Zebra Crossings is a fun place where you can go and feel safe because they understand how you feel. You get to express yourself and experience all kinds of things and nothing holds you back.”

- Luke, age 10

The efforts of Zebra Crossings are supported by our generous sponsors, both individual and business. Want to join the ranks?
